Gray is the New Yellow

2/21/2013

Thanks so much for the lovely comments from those hopping over from YHL & Our Fifth House! :) I'm thrilled to have you visiting! :)

This post is long overdue... but hey, no one ever was noticed for being fashionably early, am I right or am I right? ;)

A month or so ago I decided that enough was enough with the yellow walls in our house. When we first moved in in October 2011, I was just so excited to be able to paint a wall that I think I went a little color crazy with the yellow. I'm slowly learning that its a lot more versatile to add color through other elements in the room rather than the walls (like pillows, lamps, rugs, art, etc).

So, I got home from work one day, crossed my fingers that Aaron wouldn't kick me out to the curb right on the spot, and told him I wanted to paint the yellow.... all of it. At first he looked at me like I was kidding, but after I convinced him that I was serious and that I literally wanted to repaint 75% of our house after just painting it less than a year and a half ago, he laughed and told me "whatever makes you happy," and that was that! He's a keeper. :)

I'm not a patient person; I definitely am much more of an instant gratification kind of gal. So... when Aaron went to work that night, I went to the store to buy some paint. I went into the store only planning to buy a sample, but somehow walked out with a gallon... oops. :) I got home and literally started painting. I figured I would just paint until there wasn't any paint left. I didn't think I would get very far since it took 5 gallons of yellow (plus 5 gallons of primer)  the first time around. Not sure if it was the Benjamin Moore paint or my ninja painting skills, but I was literally a painting machine!! I painted almost the entire first floor, cutting in and everything (first coat only) in about 3 hours... with only one gallon! So I did what any normal person would do... I didn't tell Aaron that I painted because I wanted to see how shocked he would be when he came home in the morning. Muahahaha! Leave and the house is yellow, come home and the house is gray!!! I'm only 47% insane, I promise.

Aaron came home the next day and not only loved the gray but was literally ecstatic that I painted so much! Did I mention that Aaron really hates painting.. I mean he like loathes it. He would rather be doing any other chore around the house than painting. How do I know this? Well, the next day when he was helping me finish up painting the second coat and the rest of the house, about 45 minutes into it I found him vacuuming, emptying the dishwasher... ANYTHING he could do to not be painting! Next time I want him to help around the house I'm just going to threaten painting something, hahahaha!!!

Are you ready to feast your eyes on these beauties?

And some more eye candy

Seriously... does it not look 1 million times better? I can't get over the difference! I LOVE IT! :) :)

So what do you guys think? Gray is the new yellow, right?! Anyone else been painting their house lately? Have a boyfriend/husband who is as anti-paint as mine is? Spill the beans!

xx, Shannon

P.s. Check out the photos I posted last night of our recent getaway to the mountains!

P.s.s Totally forgot to mention the paint color! Benjamin Moore's Intense White in an Eggshell finish! :)

  3. wow, this looks so awesome! we're kind of obsessed with gray and have so far painted 3 rooms in our house gray. woops! we searched high and low for the perfect non-blue/purpley gray...it took a lot of paint samples. my husband does most of the painting, but neither of us are that great at it. we always end up with spots on the wall that dry funny or some gets on the trim, etc. Maybe we're just out of practice! We have a two story living room and foyer and i think we're just going to hire someone for that...scaffolding scares me!

    1. Our walls are never perfect either but they're good enough for me. :) Eek scaffolding does sound scary!! May be better to leave that one to the pros, unless you can use a ladder and a pole extender? Just an idea!

    1. Hi Vanessa! Thanks for hopping over! Probably should have mentioned this in the post (thanks for pointing it out, will go back and edit it!). The color is Benjamin Moore's Intense White in a Satin finish! :)

I wanted Grey Owl at 50% tint but the paint man looked at me like I was nuts, so I decided to just go with the lighter shade on the color card! I love it! :)

    2. Oops Eggshell, not Satin! :)

  8. Wow! I love paint transformations! Easy and inexpensive! Love the gray! You are getting rid of yellow and my daughter informed me the other day she would like a light yellow, white and gold accent bedroom. Sigh. lol

Your house looks lovely! Great job! :)

    1. Thanks Julie!! Yellow is such a fun color, but I think its better in smaller doses! Our living space is so open that we can only really paint it one color, so gray works better for us! I bet the yellow, white, and gold would look lovely in your daughter's bedroom! :)

      All the pillows are Ikea!
      Here's the yellow -- http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/30236737/

I definitely think the yellow is lighter in person than pictured on their site!

      Hope this helps! :)

  13. Gray can just do no wrong in my book! Loved reading your blog this morning- I stopped by via Carmel.

  14. I am over from Carmel too and am now convinced that we are meant to be blog buddies. I am painting my gold kitchen grey this weekend! I also have no patience and have a husband who is not thrilled about painting, so I was going to do it when he and the boy were in Memphis at a basketball game--but the trip was cancelled so I had to spill the beans. I love the new grey and I am absolutely with you on bringing color out in accessories. I am in the middle of a blog tour right now and taking pics of all of my rooms has shown me that I definitely need to dial the color on some of the walls. Newest follower!

  16. Elegant, Beautiful !! I found your site through OurFifthHouse. I would love to get a custom blog! I just finished buying a custom design on Etsy that took my money and ran. The shop was MacyandLace and they closed there shop after her giving me and others a made up story that now we are unable to get our money back since she dragged it on after the grace period. I have been really down about it. It is great to feel trust and find someone like you to not make me hesitant and get a second chance. Lots of love to you and continued blessings with your blog and business! Love, Julie

  22. Really pretty! BM has the most beautiful light grays. I recently did my main living area in my house(kitchen, family room, and hallway) in BM wish and I love it.

Though I will say, as much as I love the gray, I also kind of like the yellow! It was super bright but it looked nice with your decor. You made it work! :)
